Random CastsFor those that missed Phil Rowley, and his presentation on still waters, you'll find sympathy in the dictionary. Great presentation with many parts applicable to the slower waters in streams as well as what to look for in the lakes. Too bad you missed itAnother month has passed and now many local waters are closing down. Almost like saying goodbye to a friend that leaves each year and won't be back for months. The good part though is now we'll have time to check out other areas like Folley waters. The good part is Tumalo creek is full flowing so the water level is doing well below there. With the water level down to 45 CFS just below Wickiup the ODF&W is expecting a major loss in the Resides between there and the Little Deschutes junction. According to past history ('92) when the water gets that low we lose a lot. The other concern is how well the Brown's redds may survive with the reduced water flow. Not a whole lot there to cover the eggs. You might want to take the time to travel along the Deschutes River between Wickiup and La Pine State Park and learn more about the "lay" of the river. Great time to find those holes that are so elusive when the water is flowing at the normal levels. You just might find it very educational to take a look now. (Heard earlier that the Crooked was flowing at 40 CFS. That's not good news either!) Don't forget! The elections have been moved to November! Make sure you are there to cast your vote. Yes, you're vote does count. The number at the meeting kind of sets the mood for the coming year regarding Club activities, how many members care and what you want done in the coming year. Also, this month's program will give a great perspective on fishing. Might fit well with the poem later in the newsletter.
See you the day before Thanksgiving at the meeting.

Dues ChangesIn an effort to maintain the Club, and its budget, the Board elected to make a small increase in the annual dues for membership. At the same time we felt it only fair to offer the existing members a discount for early renewal. The dues will change as follows. The new memberships, as of January 1, 2002, will cost $36.00. After April 1st that will drop to $4.00 per month for the remainder of the year. The new memberships, after July 1, will no longer carry over into the coming year. This should make the books easier to maintain on that area. Everyone will renew each year. For the existing members that wish to renew please do so by December 31st. Until that day the renewal will be $30.00, instead of the previous $25.00, but the discount will only last until December 31. After that the renewal will cost the same as a new membership. This is in keeping with the by-laws. For those wishing to join now the Board did not change the sign up fee for this year. With the non-change a new membership is still $25.00 and will carry you through December 31 of 2002. Hopefully this increase will be enough to offset some of the increased costs of operation and still allows the Club to offer the guest speakers, lunches at outings and not work so hard at fund raising at the Annual Banquet.

Conservation ColumnThis is the time of year when we can sit back and relax knowing that the volunteer work of our 230 Club members has been completed for the most part. However there are still "core volunteers" such as the Board of Directors and the Committee Chairpersons hard at work making plans and working towards additional goals for 2002 and beyond to make COF the best Fly Fishing Club possible.Plans are now being made for 2002 but the ODFW projects will not be the same. Patty and Wayne Bowers are planning to retire this next year and some of the fun things that we used to do will not be available. As I understand it, Wayne will welcome the time to fish and Patty will carry on with the workshops that she enjoys so much. The next time that you see them be sure to wish them well in their future plans. They have done a lot to help make COF the recognized and respected Club that it is. Now that fishing season is winding down, enjoy the winter with your supply of reading material; spend some time tying flies for next spring and summer; and even take the time to fish where permissible and plan for the trips you will take next year. Enjoy The Central Oregon Flyfishers! --Tommie

Out FishingOut fishing, His thoughts are mostly good and clean Out fishing He doesn't mock his fellow men, Or harbor any grudges then; A feller's at his finest when, Out fishing, The rich are comrades to the poor, Out fishing, All are brothers of the common lure, Out fishing, The urchin with his pin and string, Can chum with millionaire or king; Vain pride is a forgotten thing, Out fishing, A feller gets a chance to dream, Out fishing, He learns the beauties of the stream, Out fishing. And when he can wash his soul in air
